Read the books

Last week USA Today ran an article about how parents can show movies to teach their kids about history. For instance the Holocaust section included Diary of Anne Frank and Civil Rights included To Kill a Mocking Bird.

What about reading the books? Actually getting them out of the library, buying them used at a bookstore, borrowing from a friend or family member?

Not that this book should even be considered in the same posting but while on vacation last month Craig put in The Princess Bride DVD one evening for the kids to watch. I flipped. Admittedly not the most rational or mature response but I've been waiting to read that book (yes, it started as a book before the lovely Cary Elwes starred as Wesley) to my kids since I first read the book - as a 14 year old.

I can't enjoy a book after I've seen a movie version. I think it would be the same for my kids. So Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl, To Kill a Mocking Bird and The Princess Bride will all be read before seen.

Yeah but nothing beats not realizing for pages and pages who the Dread Pirate Roberts is until the fall down the cliff. I remember, actually remember, that moment in my bed as a 13 year old.

Nice to hear from you friend.

Hmmm - thanks for this. My 3 year old LOVES movies. I too prefer to read the book before the movie but hadn't considered that when the times comes for him to be ready for Harry Potter to be sure to read him the book first. This will also help solve the problem of the fact that while the first movie or two or three in the series is entirely fine IMHO for a younger child, the later movies will not be, and reading the book to a younger child (a chapter a night as my mom used to do for us) will provide better spacing between stories/movies.

Same with some of the others like the Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings.

Knowing how much he loves movies, I probably would have let him see these before I thought to read him the books.

New rule in our household! Luckily I know John (dh) will agree as he is even more an avid reader than I am!
