The perfect swing

While in Canada earlier this month I noticed something. Something I had been missing since my kids were born. Something that would make my life much more enjoyable.

A proper swing.

When I was a kid, all swings had hard seats. Nowadays they are soft so that the seat conforms to your backside and, in my case, pinch. And I'm not that wide. But soft swings are not as fun as the hard ones.

You get much better jumps off of the hard ones.

Awesome! I hate those soft ones - they would always leave these big black marks on my legs. Not so flattering. And with the flat ones you can also twist around. Fun!

Jenn - swinging IS good for your health. And fun too.

Maypole - no jumping picture - Amazing Guy had the camera....

FC - when are you posting again? Oh right, the speech. Thanks for being on my side about these gosh darn soft swing seats. How did this travesty come about?

I love swings! My DH and I spent a good piece of our first date swinging and talking (at ages 28 and 34, lol)

A-

We are just children of a larger growth - keep swinging, sister!

Glad you (all y'all) had a wonderful trip - I miss my jaunts to Canada! Hugs, K

The really good hard seats got replaced by the recycled tire rubber soft ones because some kids (like, every freakin' one of 'em!) would swing up real high, jump out and then get hit in the head by the swing when they didn't move out of the way. Also, instead of sitting down properly in the swing, some kids (like, every freakin' on of them) would stand up on the seat to swing. Why? Because they could ... and because they'd seen adults do it. So, in an effort to protect our children from too much fun (and some minor potential danger, I'll admit), the evil hurtful hard swings were replaced with the friendly soft ones.

I put a wood swing in my backyard for my daughter who is 8. If she hits her head, good, it builds character and she'll learn not to do anything stupid on the swing again.

really, is there only soft ones around anymore in USA? I think we still have both...I don't really have a preference since I am too much a chicken to jump off :p

You are so right, and I never thought of that! Where did all the hard swings go? All of our parks have soft ones...
